Missing swimmer dead at Sanders Beach, marking 4th Pensacola drowning

After a short search Thursday morning, the Pensacola Fire Department recovered the body of a missing swimmer off of Sanders Beach.

The city of Pensacola told the News Journal in a statement that PFD responded to a missing swimmer call at the beach around 10:30 a.m. Thursday. PFD Fire Boat 1 then quickly began searching the area with assistance from the Pensacola Police Department and Escambia County Sheriff's Office.

"At approximately 11:12 a.m., the body of the adult male swimmer was recovered by PFD," the city's statement said. "He was pronounced dead on scene by Escambia County EMS."

The city has not released further details.

This is Pensacola's fourth drowning in less than 24 hours after the ECSO announced the bodies of a 33-year-old woman, 6-year-old and 7-year-old were recovered at Naval Air Station Pensacola.

ECSO spokesperson Morgan Lewis told the News Journal that deputies responded to NAS Pensacola around 10:30 p.m. Wednesday and found a dead female near Barrancas Beach who appeared to be swimming before her death. Law enforcement then began a search for two others reported to be with the female and found the children Thursday morning.

All three were family members of a U.S. Marine who was on base at the time. No further information in those drownings have been released.
